Martial law to be lifted in 11 provinces

The Council for National Security plans to lift martial law in 11 provinces, while extending it in three border provinces in the far Northeast, CNS spokesman Colonel Sansern Kaewkamnerd said after the junta's meeting yesterday.

The Northeast provinces set to see an extension of martial law were Nakhon Phanom, Nong Khai and Mukdahan, the spokesman said.

"The CNS is not going to use martial law as a political tool for the advantage or disadvantage of any political party or group in particular," he said.

In last month's national referendum on the new constitution, Nakhon Phanom had the highest percentage of votes against the charter. But all provinces in the Northeast, except Nakhon Ratchasima and Buri Ram, saw "No" votes exceed "Yes" votes.

The CNS would submit its new proposals on martial law to the National Security Council, which had final say over the matter, by early next week at the latest, the spokesman said.

Of the 11 provinces where martial law may be lifted, three are border provinces, in the Central region - Phetchaburi, Ratchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan.
