Thailand seeks more hydropower

The Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency Department is prepared to tap a Bt125 million budget to promote small hydropower plants during 2008-2010. A number of 49 plants are planned, 24 being new and 25 to be updgraded.

Each should need about Bt5-Bt6 million in investment, said the department's director-general Panich Pongpirodom.

Existing power plants, with capacity of 200 kilowatts or higher, have combined capacity of 43 megawatt. At the capacity, they reduce fuel oil demand by 24 million litres a year.

At present, Thailand's hydro power capacity is 2,999 MW, 2,946.7 MW belonging to the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand. The others belong to the Provincial Electricity Authority and villages.
