Thai exporters suggested to export more under GPS

In spite of economic growth slowdown of the United States, Bangkok and Washington yesterday suggested Thai exporters to export more under the US's generalised system of preferences (GSP) programme and increase intellectual property right awareness.

At the seminar entitled "US Trade Policy: Implication for Thai Exports," Apiradi Tantraporn, directorgeneral of the Foreign Trade Department said that Thai exporters should stimulate use the benefit of the GSP to increase export to the US.

"Although Thailand is one of the top three countries that use highest GSP privilege to the US, export has focused on some par¬ticular products," she said, adding that food and agricul¬tural export are key sectors that should apply for more GSP.

According to the US's Commercial Affair, US offered 4,600 products lists under its GSP privilege to 131 developing countries. Thailand utilised 1,218 tariff lines worth US$4.25 billion last year, accounting for only 13 per cent of the total GSP benefits. Angola and India is top two countries that utilise high¬est benefit of the GSP.
