CNS fails to prove charges against Thaksin after one year: Samak

People Power Party leader Samak Sundaravej Sunday visited constituents for the first time after he became the leader of the PPP.

Samak visited residents of Bangkok's Din Daeng district by attending a community event held at the sports ground in front of Din Daeng police station at 9:30 am.

He told reporters that he had time so his advisers told him to go out to visit voters.

Giving a speech to residents of Din Daeng flats who gathered at the event, Samak said political opponents tried to discredit former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra by making allegations against him ranging from two- and three-digit lottery charges, drug-related killings and lese majeste charges.

"These people are shameless. A political party hates Thaksin so it accused Thaksin of ordering the killings of drug suspects," Samak told the crowd.

"Those who accused Thaksin of ordered the killings definitely supported drug trade."

Speaking to reporters at the scene, Samak said the coup was reaching its 1st anniversary but the Council for National Security had not yet proved its allegations against Thaksin.

"Where are the corruption cases now? I would like to say that jealousy caused damages to the country. They staged the coup without justification and could not do anything [against Thaksin] after one year has passed. They could not prove the four charges against Thaksin yet," Samak said.

He said the lese majesty charges had yet to be proved while the corruption charges "are still only the courts' door".

Samak said the CNS accused Thaksin of interfering in the works of independent organisations but the CNS itself interfered in certain agencies now to try to interrupt the works of the PPP.
