Three killed in South

Three people died, and three others were wounded in six attacks in the restive South, police said yesterday.

In Narathiwat's Rusoh district a woman was shot dead at 6.45am while commuting to work on a motorcycle. Araya Waetea, an employee of the district office, was hit twice, in the head and left arm.

At 11.50am in the province's Rangae district, Useng Sarehnu, 30 was shot dead at his motorcycle-repair shop. He was wanted in connection with the murder of two marines in Ban Tanyong Limo in 2005. Useng was the second suspect in the case to be killed by unknown gunmen in a pickup truck.

The first suspect was Tuantuwae-apel Nikaji, 25, a resident of Ban Tanyong Limo, who was shot dead at the end of last month at the same location. He was also killed by a group of men in a pickup while walking across the road to the motorcycle-repair shop.

At about lunchtime in Pattani's Saiburi district, Masae Dimung, 43 was shot dead while driving a pickup with 10 other villagers to an Islamic boarding school in the district. One of two men on a motorcycle shot him in the head, killing him instantly.

In neighbouring Yala three people were wounded in three gun attacks in the afternoon.

Hatthaya Tangpratomwong, 53, was shot while riding a motorcycle in the city centre from the school where she taught.

Wichian Lertpongpaisan, 48, a shop worker, was hit at about 2pm.

Late on Thursday night a group of unknown men sprayed rifle fire into police quarters in Yala's Lam Mai subdistrict, wounding Bounthong Narenut, 54, while she was watching television.

After the attack on the house belonging to Pol Sr Sgt-Major Chob Sukraksa, the men in a pickup launched an M-79 grenade into Lam Mai Police Station nearby, but nobody inside was hurt.
