Spanish dances

Rhythmic tango and dynamic jarocho dances from Mexico will this week highlight at Bangkok's Ninth International Festival of Dance and Music at Thailand Cultural Centre.

Tonight, Grupo Jarocho National Dance Company presents its unique interpretations of flamenco, salsa, Afro-Cuban, 'son' and danzn. The Spanish word, "jarocho", describes a person or music from the state or city of Veracruz, and this show is a musical expression of the creative core of jarocho. The show is directed by Richard

O'Neal, former assistant director of Riverdance, with music is by Luis Le'ero.

On Sunday, No-Bailaras Tango Company will bring the true tango spirit to Bangkok with its "Grotesque Passion Night", which is a synthesis of traditional, intimate tango and dramatic contemporary dance moves. The choreographer is Silvana Grill.

Showtimes are 7.30pm. Tickets range from Bt200 to Bt2,000 and are available at Thaiticketmajor.

Rock for the trees

The two-day charity festival, "Forest, Men and Music", wraps up tonight with performances by pop and rock stars at Impact Arena in Muang Thong Thani. The line-up includes Nuvo, Noi of Pru, Chatree Kongsuwan, T-Bone, Neng Y Not 7 and Peter Corp Dyrendal.

The show starts at 7.30pm. Part of the proceeds will go to support wildlife and forest preservation. Tickets are Bt500 to Bt2,000, available at Thaiticketmajor.

Lifelike sculpture

Sculptor Watchara Prayoonkum unveils his latest super-realistic sculpture collection, "Body Mind Peace", at 6.30pm on Monday at Ardel Gallery of Modern Art.

Watchara's new collection is inspired by the late dancer and puppetmaster Sakorn Yang-keawsot, aka Joe Louis.

Watchara once created a life-size sculpture of the National Artist. The collection features fibreglass sculptures of masked dancers in traditional Thai costume.

The show runs until October 21. The gallery is on Baromrachachonee Road in Taling Chan district, and is open from 10 am to 6.30pm on Tuesday to Saturday and from 9.30am to 5pm on Sunday.

A gem of a show

The latest designs by Thai and international jewellers will be showcased at the 40th Bangkok Gems and Jewellery show,

which opens on Tuesday in Challenger 1-3 at Impact Convention Centre, Muang Thong Thani.

Filling the 80,000-square-metre hall, precious jewellery and gemstones from 1,000 companies will be on display in glittering display cases. Diamonds, gold, silver and precious stones will be featured in various designs.

The fair runs until September 22, from 10am to 6pm daily. Admission is Bt100.
