Delight for Davenport as comeback starts with a Bali win

Bali, Indonesia (dpa) - Lindsay Davenport turned in a vintage performance, firing nine aces to win her first match after one year out of the game as she reached the second round of the Commonwealth Bank Classic on Tuesday.

Lindsay Davenport of the US returns to Eleni Daniilidou of Greece during their first round match at the WTA Tour Tennis Tournament in Bali, Indonesia on 11 September 2007.

"I'm trying to focus and be concentrated," said the three-time Grand Slam champion with 51 titles on her trophy shelf. "I'm really happy that I won.

"You never know what to expect, to play this way is very exciting and means a lot to me."

Davenport, who gave birth just three months ago, is already testing the waters for a possible return to competition as a "working" mum on the WTA.

Davenport lifted the Bali title in 2005 and lost in the semis in 2006 before announcing her retirement a few weeks later.

But after giving birth in June to son Jagger, her pangs for tennis became just as strong as her maternal instinct. To that end, she's travelled to the Indonesian island with mother Ann, her coach, a nanny and little Jagger in tow.

The California admitted that her form was a pleasant surprise. "It's all about being back on the court. I would have been happy even if I hadn't won."

The winner broke three times and ended the contest with her ninth ace after sweeping the last 20 points of the first set.

Davenport last played a year ago in Beijing when she announced she was leaving the game for the joys of home and hearth.

That vow lasted until barely a month after the June birth, with Davenport now committed to Bali plus the WTA event next week in Beijing.

After that, she will make a decision about continuing into 2008, possibly beginning in January in Australia.

She will play American Julie Ditty, who beat Czech Hana Sromova 6-2, 6-1.

Third seed Patty Schnyder said recent stomach problems were not a problem in a win over teenaged Chinese Zhang Shuai 6-4, 6-2.

"I couldn't read her game well," said the two-time Swiss semi-finalist. " I serve well and kept up the pressure. I felt good even in the heat.

"I'm feeling strong and fit right now."

Australian Casey Dellacqua will play top seed Jelena Jankovic after the Serb's first round bye thanks to a defat of Dane Caroline Wozniacki 1-6, 6-1, 6-3.

German Martina Mueller defeated Tatiana Poutchek of Belarus 6-3, 6-3 while China's Yuan Meng stopped Russian Yaroslava Shvedova 6-0, 6-1
