Philippe Joubert, president of Alstom's power systems division, said Thailand's need to diversify its energy sources provided plenty of opportunities for Alstom to increase its presence.
He said the company was one of the few in the world able to provide a wide range of EPC - engineering, procurement and construction - services in all energy platforms, particularly nuclear power plants.
In the next two years, Asia will represent more than half of the world's power generation business, Jourbert said, adding that Alstom is expanding aggressively in the region, especially in China.
For instance, its subsidiary Alstom Beizhong Power (Beijing) - a joint venture in which Alstom holds a 60-per-cent stake, with Beijing Heavy Electric Machinery Works holding the remainder - completed in June a 800-million-yuan (Bt3.4 billion) steam turbine generator factory in Beijing.
Alstom Holdings Thailand is expecting favourable business next year, with a sales increase from various IPP bids and delivery of the second block of a 760-megawatt combined-cycle gas turbine for its power plant in Kaeng Khoi, Saraburi, said country president Nazir Rizk.
The 1,468MW turnkey project for Mitsui Japan and Gulf Power Generation cost about ¤700 million (Bt32.78 billion).
