City officials also fumigated the posts and beams of Wat Suthat and areas around the Giant Swing, Khon Muang Plaza and City Hall with a repellent to keep birds from perching on them and leaving mounds of droppings.
District chief Reungsak Horareung said this was meant to keep the area clean and tackle the pigeon problem. The disinfectant was not harmful, he said.
The procedure would be repeated this morning and tomorrow before the area is washed down and cleaned over the weekend, he added.
The district had also asked authorities to catch stray dogs and send them to shelters, as there had been many complaints about the animals.
However, while the officials sprayed the grounds, many people came to feed the pigeons and walk their dogs in the area, prompting officials to urge them not to feed the birds and not to leave dog excrement on the footpath.
