More open education

Local administrative bodies should be more open in providing education to communities with financial and logistical support from the government, a Bangkok seminar on the subject was told yesterday.

Assoc Prof Pharit Siribannaphithak, dean of Chulalongkorn University's Faculty of Education, said state-sponsored education, which now accounted for 90 per cent provided nationwide, welcomed competiton and wanted to help teaching personnel improve.

He cited a recent study by the Office for National Standards and Quality Assessment that while most private schools passed the annual appraisals most government schools failed.
