Police raid shops selling pirated shirts of Princess

Police seized Thursday a large number of imitation polo shirts carrying a drawing by Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn from three shops in Bo Bae wholesale market and arrested their owners.

The raids by the Crime Suppression Division officers netted 967 shirts.

A suspect, who owns one of the shops said tearfully she had no idea the shirts she had bought from a factory were produced without permission from the Phu Fa shop, which sells Royallyapproved products.

The Phu Fa shop deputy manager, Tharisa Ketuthat warned against copyright infringement of such products. She said the commercial use of drawings or art work by members of Royal family without permission was also against the law, despite the good will by unwitting violators.

The drawing by Her Royal Highness depicts a blue cartoon elephant presenting a heart with its trunk, with her signature underneath.

She drew it for His Majesty the King as his birthday gift, on December 5, in 1982.
