Social welfare now covers Aids drugs and certain related treatment costs for more than 36,000 Aids and HIV patients registered with the Social Security Office, the SSO secretary-general Surin Jirawisit said yesterday.

The newly effective coverage includes both basic and alternative Aids drug formulas for those with drug-resistant symptoms. The eligible treatment costs are for tests of CD4, viral load types, as well other tests that need to be conducted by hospitals not under contract with the SSO.

As of July, the SSO had paid out around Bt300 million for drugs and treatment for 36,354 Aids and HIV patients registered with it, he said.
