Posh Spice, also a member of the judging panel, cornered Kelly Shaw, 24, for an interview after the £2,000 (Bt136,250) award was handed out. In the interview, Posh complimented the young designer on her quirky "Brit Kitsch" collection and expressed a strong interest in buying some of the pieces.

Shaw, is a year away from completing her bachelor's in Fashion Design at the UEL Docklands campus. The university has 20,000 students from more than 120 countries.

"My designs are a quiet protest against the increasingly apathetic youth of today. So much fashion looks the same these days - I wanted to create something different," Shaw said. "And Victoria Beckham was really enthusiastic; she said she loved the collection and really wanted to wear my designs."

Graduate Fashion Week showcases the best of UK student fashion design, attracting photographers, talent scouts, journalists and buyers from all over the world. Shaw was one of the fourteen final-year students whose collections were featured. The River Island Gold Award is the only honour of its kind for students earning fashion degrees. Plus, the show was given extra star-shimmer with guests like singer Rod Stewart's daughter Kimberley, model Sophie Anderton and celebrated designers Mary Quant and Zandra Rhodes.

Designs from Shaw's winning collection included a strawberry print mac, embroidered hoodies and frilly knickers, which will be displayed at River Island's flagship store in Marble Arch, London, this weekend.
