A total of 39.9 per cent of the 1,379 people surveyed said they wanted to see an early election so that Thailand could return to democracy. Two dates for the general elections dates are now being considered - December 16 and 23.

More than 36 per cent of respondents living in Bangkok and surrounding provinces said they wanted to see countrywide peace, and another 15 per cent said they wanted an end to violence in the deep South, according to results of the poll by Rajabhat Suan Dusit University.

Almost one-third - 32.7 per cent - of those surveyed said they were worried the election would be delayed while 29.1 per cent said they were concerned about a new coup.

On the hectic political activities in the run-up to the general election, more than 33 per cent of respondents said they believed old political faces would return in the election.

And slightly less than 10 per cent said they were not paying attention to developments because they believed eventually only politicians, not members of the public, would gain.
