Breaking news: Foreigners want Thai election postponed

December 23 is a (nearly) perfect date for the general election. We can cast our votes and then kick back and plan our New Year celebration.

Published on August 27, 2007

The Election Commission wants to have the poll ASAP, and its designated date seems the most suitable choice. In early December everyone will be celebrating His Majesty the King's 80th birthday, and then the SEA Games continue until December 15.

The one sector that's not happy about a December 23 election is the diplomatic community. The embassies' political and information staff will have to record, assess and report the poll results to their home countries, and then most of them will be in a race to fly back and rejoin their families for Christmas.

If you listen carefully, you can almost hear the gentle prayers of the embassy crowd for the junta to postpone the vote. Almost.
