School suspects confess

Six suspects nabbed from an Islamic boarding school in Narathiwat in July confessed they had bombed as many as 20 locations in the restive south.

Police took them to re-enact their attacks throughout the province - including one at a restaurant in the Muang district  where at least 20 people were injured.

The six suspects, Manase Ya, Mamakoylee Sueyae, Waeasying Waema, Muhamad Soheyi Ya, Mafaris Buraheng and Rusdi Doloh, were arrested together with a 16 year-old student from Islam Burapha school in Narathiwat on July 2.

The students begged for forgiveness from the shop owners they had bombed.

Authorities have accused the Islamic school of providing a breeding ground for the militants who then carried out acts of violence throughout the region and forced the school to shut down.

But the school's executives have rejected the allegation, saying they had no idea about the suspects as they were not registered there, and appealed for the school to be re-opened as most of the students had no place to extend their education.

The provincial authorities who ordered the school's licence to be revoked are unlikely to consider the appeal. They said that the school could only re-open if all the executives were changed and the school was renamed.
