Frequency ranges for 3G spectra approved

The telecom regulator yesterday approved the frequency-range table for third-generation (3G) cellular licensing regulations.

National Telecommuni-cations Commission (NTC) secretary-general Suranan Wongvithayakamjorn said the three spectrum ranges were 1,920-1,980 megahertz, 2,010-2,025MHz and 2,110-2,170MHz.

The NTC is seeking a consultant to study the spectrum table and prepare 3G licensing terms and conditions, including the number of 3G licences.

The NTC has sent letters to six global companies inviting them to be considered as its consultant.

They are Ovum; Spectrum Strategy; Analysis and Interconnection Com-munications, both in the UK; Germany's Detacon; and Nera in the US.

The six firms are required to join with local companies in submitting proposals to the NTC, which will select the winner next month.

Suranan said the six firms were expected to reply to the NTC letter this month.

The watchdog has set aside Bt24 million for the consultant's fee.

The NTC hopes to finish the 3G licensing regulations in December and hold a public hearing on them.

Cellular operators use 3G technology to offer bandwidth-hungry content to phone-users at blazing speed.

The NTC also granted 2 million mobile-phone numbers to Advanced Info Ser-vice, which had requested 3 million.
