August 21, 1874: Abolition of slavery begins

King Rama V on August 21, 1874, pronounced a royal Act concerning the retirement of children of Thai slaves.

On the day, His Majesty King Rama V ordered an Act stating that slaves' offspring born since 1868 now had a new ransom rate that must be reduced every year until the slave children could pay for the ransom themselves. Furthermore, all slave children would be "retired" when they reached 21 years of age.

The measure was part of the process to abolish slavery with the least impact on both masters and slaves.

August 19, 1945: The United States of America and the United Kingdom approved Thailand's peace announcement. Thailand declared peace on August 16 after Japan surrendered to Allied forces in the Second World War two days earlier.
