Parents donate baby's organs

Doctors yesterday harvested organs from a newborn baby boy declared brain-dead by doctors. The child's parents agreed to donate the organs for those seeking transplants.

Surgeons from Phra Nakhon Sri Ayutthaya Hospital and Bhumibol Hospital in Bangkok performed the two-hour operation.

Twenty-five-day-old Phattharaphan Sophan had been declared dead after choking on milk while left alone.

The surgical team did not identify what organs were donated to the Thai Red Cross Society. The child was later returned to his parents and a funeral will be held at Wat Phra Kaew in Phachi district.

Mother Praphaiphis was saddened by the death but expressed confidence in the decision to donate the organs.

"My son has made a huge contribution. I hope he will be born to me again if I am pregnant," she said.

Dr Surang Mekdee, a doctor at the Ayutthaya hospital, said the child was examined by a three-member team of doctors, as required by Medical Council regulations.

The child's brain-dead status must be confirmed before the operation by the team, which may not include any of the surgeons performing the extraction.

"Phattharaphan's brain-dead status was confirmed and the donation of organs was authorised by his parents in writing," she added.
