Djokovic claws past Federer to to lift Montreal title

Serbian Novak Djokovic lifts his trophy after defeating his Swiss opponent Roger Federer in their final match of the Montreal Masters.

Djokovic, moving up Monday to third in the rankings, scored his first career win against Federer, who had been 4-0 against the Serb before Sunday.

"I can't describe the feeling I have right now," said the winner.

"It's like a dream come true, especially against Federer in the finals, to win those tiebreakers was just incredible. I managed to win these tiebreaks against a player who probably has the best score in tiebreakers, who is the strongest player mentally in the world right now."

Riding a 16-match winning streak in Canada with titles in Toronto in 2004 and 2006, Federer had been searching for his 50th career title. Djokovic had claimed a Masters Series title in March in Miami and was fresh from Saturday's win in the semis over world number two Rafael Nadal.

"This is the best day of my career," said Djokovic, introduced as a Croatian during the post-match ceremony. "I won a major in Miami, but to beat the first and second of the world is unbelievable. I couldn't have asked for more. I played some impressive tennis this week."

Djokovic pulled level with Federer on four season titles, both trailing Nadal's six. The three all move on to next week's Masters in Cincinnati, Ohio, with Federer struggling to polish his form.

Federer was not bothered by the "insignificant" setback.

"The goal this season was to win Wimbledon - done that. Try to stay number one in the world - it would have helped to win today," he said.

"But you can't have it all. I'm looking at the US Open, looking down the road, well, the (November) Masters Cup. There's still a long way to go. I can't start being disappointing about just one match. He played well. I couldn't get the job done."

In the third set, Djokovic broke early, lost it but dominated in the tiebreaker, Federer missing on a between-the-legs shot as he chased a lob.

"(Djokovic) definitely played a great tournament. He's been able to back it up now since basically a year now," Federer said.

"If he keeps this up he's going to create some chances also at the Grand Slams because, he's been to two semi-finals already (Roland Garros, Wimbledon this season).
