Her Majesty and mothers honoured

People the length and breadth of the country have celebrated Mother's Day - many offering alms to monks and others running for fun and Her Majesty the Queen.

Her Majesty turned 75 yesterday.

In the capital, Governor Apirak Kosayodhin and blue- and yellow-clad worshipers distributed alms to 576 monks at Sanam Luang. Blue is the colour associated with Her Majesty and yellow His Majesty the King.

Similar events were held across the country.

In Lampang in the North, children, youths and the elderly offered alms to 76 monks at Lom Rad Temple. There was a candlelight ceremony seeking blessings for Her Majesty, the country's maternal figurehead.

Entertainment was provided. "This is the grandest Mother's Day event we've held and we wish to honour Her Majesty and to encourage people to think of their mothers," Lom Rad Tambon Admini-

strative Organisation chairman Thanakorn Pakornsakun said.

In Uttaradit, Governor Suksan Wanaputi joined more than 1,000 offering alms.

Earlier in the day, about 5,000 participated in a fun run, shouting "Long live Her Majesty" along the way.

In Chon Buri, thousands competed in a mini-marathon celebrating the birthdays of both Their Majesties. His Majesty will be 80 in December. Winners received trophies.

Meanwhile, Chai Pattana Foundation secretary-general Sumet Tantivejkul suggested people seek forgiveness and blessings from their mothers. "Don't forget; mothers nurture and protect us at all costs," he said.
