President Apinan Sumanaseni said the board was considering whether to seek 53 or 64 new aircraft, reported Dow Jones Newswires.

The board will make a decision at its next special board meeting, he said, without providing a specific time frame.

The fleet expansion is part of THAI's plan to broaden its operating network. More planes will enable it to fly to new destinations.

THAI also reported its net profit plunged 86 per cent in its fiscal third quarter, with earnings of Bt68 million for the April-June period, down from Bt473 million in the same period last year.

In a filing with the Stock Exchange of Thailand, the full-service airline said its sales and service revenues in the quarter amounted to Bt44.53 billion, up 5.7 per cent year on year, while operating expenses totalled Bt44.42 billion, up 7.9 per cent year on year.

As a result, its profit from the sale of goods and rendering of services was Bt114 million, a steep drop from Bt959 million in the same period last year.

Its nine-month net profit stood at Bt8.3 billion, down 20.95 per cent from Bt10.5 billion a year earlier.
