Neiss : IMF's bitter pill necessary

Hubert Neiss, former International Monetary Fund's executive who dealt with Thailand during the financial crisis in 1997, said that, looking back, the IMF bitter prescription was essential, in spite of some criticism that some IMF requirements might be too harsh for Thailand at that time.

Speaking at the Asian Financial Outlook : The Next 10 Years" Seminar organized by Thai Institute of Directors, The Nation and Asia News Network, Neiss responded to  Ammar Siamwalla, acting President of Thailand Development Research Institute, that some of IMF requirements were "kiss of death". Neiss said that,  "some of the reforms are necessary, especially the banking reform. The (Thai) government had to choice."

Although these are normally part of IMF, but there is second reason. Without tackling these necessary reform, the government would not regain the confidence which is needed to calm down the market to get the international financial support. So there's no choice. Although I agree that there's complication of the programme of the programme which makes the task of the government more difficult. But at that time, I think there's no other chance. Otherwise, no country would have lended to support the programme. - The Nation
