Panel to probe bribes charge

Three judges were appointed yesterday to launch an inquiry into allegations a high-ranking court official offered bribes to a Constitution Tribunal judge to secure a not-guilty verdict for the Thai Rak Thai Party.

The move came after a fact-finding panel, headed by Supreme Court vice-president Wirat Limwichai, found on Monday that there were some grounds to the claims about the official's attempt to bribe a judge in May.

Office of the Court of Justice deputy secretary-general Saravud Benchakul said Supreme Court president Panya Thanomrawd yesterday endorsed a disciplinary inquiry panel, which will be led by Supreme Court judge Theerawat Pattranawat, who also sits on the panel hearing a probe into the Ratchadaphisek land purchase.

The other two panel members are Appeal Court judge Sumit Supadul and Supreme Court assistant judge Kasem Kasempanya.

"The Supreme Court president selected these three judges because they are known for their integrity and honesty. They have been known to issue rulings in a straightforward manner," Saravud explained. The panel has been given 180 days to complete its investigation. The official in question is still considered innocent and has not been suspended or transferred, Saravud said.
