Non Ingkutanon, deputy director for wireline broadband services, yesterday said the number of subscribers had already reached 40,000.
There are many who want to access the Internet wirelessly while travelling, in order to keep key information updated, such as stock movements, he said.
True has spent about Bt150 million on developing its Wi-Fi business and expects to reach the break-even point this year.
"We're targeting revenues of Bt100 million from the service this year, up from last year's Bt50 million," Non said.
True is Thailand's largest broadband Internet service provider. It currently has 500,000 broadband subscribers, and that number is expected to reach 700,000 this year.
The company has more than 4,000 Wi-Fi spots around the Kingdom, covering Bangkok and more than 50 provinces. Its coverage includes CentralWorld and all branches of Central and Au Bon Pain, plus the Siam Square area. It also has its own Internet cafes in key areas with Wi-Fi service available.
