Copper tint to end Bt2 confusion

The Treasury Department will change the colour of the two-baht coins so they will be more easily recognised. Many people confuse the current version with the one-baht coins.

The new coins will be copper-coloured but their size will be the same, department director-general Punnot tip Surathin said yesterday.

There are 400 million two-baht coins in circulation. The copper-coloured coins will go into circulation next year, but the existing silver ones will remain legal tender.

Meanwhile, the department will produce commemorative coins to mark Her Majesty the Queen's 75th birthday. The coins will be minted in gold, silver and a copper-nickel composite. The gold coin is valued at between Bt16,000 and Bt18,000, silver between Bt800 and Bt1,400, and copper-nickel ones at Bt20. There will be a special Bt10 coin, too. They will go into distribution from Thursday and can also be purchased at www.treasury.go.

th. In other developments, Puntip said the department would issue bonds to finance government construction.

The department has asked Finance Minister Chalongphob Sussangkarn to approve the Mor Chit park-and-ride development. Once received, it will be tabled in the Cabinet.
