Bundesliga sides advance easily, Cologne stunned.

Hamburg - While there were high scoring victories for Bundesliga sides on Sunday in the first round of the German Cup, second division Cologne were beaten by the reserve side of Werder Bremen.

The biggest victory of the day belonged to Schalke 04, who won 9-0 against a ten-man Eintracht Trier side. Gerald Asamoah was the only Schalke player to score more than once with a hat-trick, while Rafinha, Mesut Ozil, Kevin Kuranyi, Ivan Rakitic, Christian Pander and Heiko Westermann scored the other goals.

A ten-man SV Hamburg won 5-0 at fourth division Holstein Kiel, with goals from Rafael van der Vaart, Mohamed Zidan, Nigel de Jong, Eric Choupo-Moting and Romeo Castelen.

Cup holders Nuremberg had no problems winning 6-0 against fourth division club Victoria Hamburg. Robert Vittek scored a hat-trick for the home side, with Angelos Charisteas getting two and the final goal being scored by Zvjezdan Misimovic.

Newly promoted Bundesliga side MSV Duisburg struggled in the first half against third division Babelsberg, but a brace from Nigerian Manasseh Ishiaku in the second half, as well as goals by Blagoy Georgiev and Michael Lamey gave the favourites a 4-0 victory.

Alexander Meier was a hat-trick hero for Eintracht Frankfurt as they won 4-1 against third division club Union Berlin. Ioannis Amanatidis scored the fourth goal for Frankfurt, while Nico Patschinski scored for Union Berlin.

VfL Wolfsburg won 4-0 at Wuerzburger FV, while Armenia Bielefeld won 2-0 at SV Seligenporten.

The only Bundesliga sides that struggled on Sunday were Karlsruhe and VfL Bochum.

Newly promoted Karlsruhe needed extra time to beat fourth division Neustrelitz with goals by Sebastian Freis and Stefan Buck, while Bochum won 1-0 at Dynamo Dresden. Dennis Grote score the only goal of the game for Bochum midway through the second half.

The reserve side of Werder Bremen came from two goals down to beat Cologne 4-2 after extra time. Milivoje Novakovic and Nemanja Vucicevic gave the second division side a two-goal lead, but a goal in both halves by Austrian Martin Harnik brought Werder Bremen back to level terms.

In the second half of extra time Frank Loenig and Kenny Schmidt gave Werder a well-deserved victory.

Another second division side knocked out was Erzgebirge Aue, who lost 4-3 on a penalty shoot-out against third division Wuppertaler SV.

In other games Carl Zeiss Jena won 3-0 at Gera, SC Freiburg beat Villingen 3-1 while SC Paderborn won 1-0 at the reserve side of Bayer Leverkusen.

Last season's quarter-finalist Alemannia Aachen won 3-0 at Normannia Gmuend and TuS Koblenz beat TSV Havelse 3-0.

Mainz 05, who were relegated from the first division at the end of last season beat Wormatia Worms 6-1, while Darmstadt 98 lost 3-1 at home to Greuther Fuerth.

On Saturday Bundesliga sides Energie Cottbus and Bayer Leverkusen were knocked out. Cottbus went out on penalties to third division outfit Rot-Weiss Essen after the sides were level at 2-2 at the end of extra time, while Leverkusen lost 1-0 at second division club St Pauli.

The final game of the first round will be played on Monday with Wacker Burghausen taking on Bayern Munich.
