People in Bangkok and nearby provinces have more faith in the People Power Party than in the Democrats to solve economic and social problems, a new poll says.

But the Abac Poll Research Centre found that 70 per cent of the respondents were not confident that either of the parties would be able to solve the economic, social and political problems of the country.

Research centre director Noppadon Kannika said that respondents, when pressed to make a choice, 30.1 per cent believed the People Power Party would do a better job in solving economic problems, while only 22.5 per cent had faith in the Democrats.

For solving social problems, 31.5 per cent trusted the People Power Party, while only 18 per cent had faith in the Democrats, he said.

The two parties were evenly split with 20 per cent votes when it came to solving political problems and conflicts.

But, a little more than 80 per cent did not believe in either party, Noppadon said.

The poll also showed that 34 per cent agreed with former members of the disbanded Thai Rak Thai joining the People Power Party, 17 per cent disagreed, and 49 per cent had no comment.

But 70 per cent of people, identifying themselves as not supporting the military-backed government, agreed with the move.

Of the respondents, 80.6 per cent were not interested in joining the People Power Party, but 19.5 per cent were.

The survey polled opinions on the charter television debate aired live on on Friday.

About 40 per cent liked the debate but more did not saying the discussion was "too distant" from real people.

Most believed those attending the broadcast behaved badly; shouting and acted in a provocative manner.

Some speakers did not make clear points, they added.

The survey was conducted on Friday and Saturday with 2,135 respondents in and around Bangkok.
