Workers lose out, but buyers benefit

Union Footwear's decision to close some plants may be bad news for its employees, but consumers are raking in good bargains as thousands of pairs of brand-name shoes made by the company are being cleared at fire sales.

The manufacturer's Bang Pakong, Chachoengsao factory was crowded yesterday as hundreds of people flocked to rummage for cheap sports shoes. Prices started at Bt150 for discontinued lines and the latest styles were going at half price.

The company decided to close some of the factories due to financial difficulties caused by the appreciation of the baht.

Union Footwear held stock clearance sales at its Bangpoo and Bang Chan factories in Samut Prakan, and Lat Phrao in Bangkok. The sales will continue until the end of next month.
