German Bundesliga club SV Hamburg, who turned a disastrous start to last season around to qualify for the Intertoto Cup and are now on the verge of making it into the UEFA Cup, will face Hungarian team Honved Budapest.
Hamburg official Bernd Hoffmann said that he was satisfied with the draw, especially as they first had to play away from home, preventing a clash with a Rolling Stars concert which will take place in the stadium on August 15.
"We are happy with the draw. For our fans it will be an attractive trip and we should be able to advance," he said.
Another appealing draw sees Young Boys Berne take on French club Lens, while Scottish second division team, Dunfermline Athletic, who qualified for the UEFA Cup after losing the Scottish cup final to champions Celtic, will face Hacken from Sweden.
The only previous winners of the competition involved at this stage, Turkish club Galatasaray who won in 2000, will have to take on European first-timers NK Slaven Koprivnica from Croatia.
There are three former European Cup Winners' Cup champions in the draw, with Spanish club Atletico Madrid, who also qualified via the Intertoto Cup being drawn against Serbian team Vojvodina.
Serie A club Sampdoria will face Hajduk Split while Georgian club Dinamo Tbilisi who won the competition in 1981 face Austrian club Rapid Vienna.
UN Kaerjeng 97 from Luxembourg, who were surprise qualifiers for the second round, have a tough task if they want to continue their fairytale run. They face Standard Liege.
The first leg games will be played on August 16, with the return legs on August 30.
