Supporters of the Democratic Alliance Against Dictatorship gather outside Bangkok Remand Prison yesterday to demand the release of the group’s leaders.
They marched from Mission Hospital in the morning and then moved to Government House to demand the freedom of 15 protest leaders who were detained after a violent anti-coup demonstration last month.
The protesters held placards that read: "This is justice under
the feet of Prem", referring to
Privy Council President Prem Tinsulanonda, who protesters allege was involved in the September 19 coup.
Besides the prison uniforms, the protesters wore leg irons and handcuffs.
They called on voters to reject the new constitution in the August 19 national referendum.
About 100 student activists rallied in front of Bangkok Remand Prison to demand the release of the 15 leaders of the White Pigeon Group. The 15 were arrested following a clash with police outside Prem's residence.
The student activists from Ramkhamhaeng University gathered in front of the prison at 9.30am. They held banners giving moral support to the 15 and joined in chants.
Activist Waranchai Chaichana and a small group of protesters dressed in prison uniforms tried to enter the prison but were blocked by officials.
Korkaew Pikulthong, a DAAD leader, said the group's eight detained leaders were tired and some had cold.
"I want the prison officers to look after them like they were heroes. They should be receiving basic rights like other prisoners," he said.
He claimed the eight were being deprived of their rights.
