The court said Dr Paradee Sa-nguandeekul of the state-run Piboonrak Hospital in Udon Thani had treated Porntip Silomnoi in line with medical standards.

Porntip's husband, Boon-chu, who sought Bt11.67 million in compensation, said he would appeal. "I want justice," he said through his tears.

He claimed the hospital had failed to provide oxygen promptly to his wife when she slipped into shock during the surgery. The oxygen tank in the operating theatre was empty and finding another one took more than 10 minutes..

"At first, the hospital director told me that I would get compensation and that my relatives and I would get permanent jobs at the hospital," he said. At that time, he worked as a security guard at the hospital. "I didn't get any compensation and I was also forced to leave my job," he said.

Boonchu was sentenced to three years jail after he was charged with stealing the hospital's medical file on his wife, which he cliamed he had borrowed to make photostated copies to be used as evidence. He is now on bail pending appeal against the decision.

Preeyanan Lorsermwat-tana, head of a network for medical-malpractice victims, said she would help Boonchu for justice for his wife.
