Thai Rak Thai thwarted

The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) yesterday passed a draft law that bans disbanded political parties from registering a new party under the same name, logo or abbreviation.

Published on July 27, 2007

The new law, passed in three straight readings, has put paid to a plan by former members of the defunct Thai Rak Thai Party to register a new party under its old name. The ban will be lifted after five years and follows the Constitution Tribunal's ruling on May 30.

The Tribunal disbanded Thai Rak Thai along with three small parties for electoral fraud related to the general election of April 2, 2006.

The new law follows an NLA resolution last Wednesday that passed a bill to lift a ban on registering new political parties.
