First drought insurance

The Insurance Department has joined hands with General Insurance Association and Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives to introduce Southeast Asia's first ever agricultural goods insurance package, which would shield them from possible damages from drought.

Corn from Nakhon Ratchasima province will be the first product under the project, with total insurance value of Bt1.33 million. The insurance period will start from July 16 to October 13, according to Chantra Purnariksha, director-general of the Insurance Department.

The insurance premium is based on weather index.

According to Chantra, the insurance package will be extended to cover floods. And the coverage area will also be expanded.
