PM leads Cabinet in offering apology to Prem

Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont on Tuesday apologised to Privy Council President General Prem Tinsulanonda for lax security that let anti-junta protesters riot in front of his Si Sao Theves residence on Sunday night.

The government will do its best to prevent such clashes, he said, after leading his Cabinet to Prem's residence at 2pm.

The premier said people who lost power had recently tried to frame Prem. But Prem was handpicked by His Majesty the King to preside over the Privy Council, and therefore was an honourable figure who should not have been challenged.

Surayud quoted Prem as saying that he was not angry with those involved in the brawling because nobody had expected that to happen.

Prem asked the government to do its best to lead the country back to democracy.
