Napaporn and Noppawan Win Doubles 1st Round

Napaporn Tongsalee got a moral boost to her dismal singles results as she paired up with Noppawan Lertcheewakarn to win the doubles first round of the US$10,000 SAT ITF Women's Circuit 3 at the LTAT National Tennis Centre on Monday.

The women's singles top seed who never survived beyond the first round in her five previous tournaments proceeded to the doubles quarter-finals following a 6-4 7-5 win over Indonesian Lutfiana-Aris Budiharto and Hong Kong's Yang Zi-jun.

They were not the only Thais to advance to the next stage yesterday as wildcard Sophia Mulsap and Varatchaya Wongteanchai also cleared their hurdles, beating Chinese Lee Wei-ping and Yang Yi-sin 6-4 6-3.

But another wildcard pair Uthumporn Pudtra and Natchanok Saenyaukhot were stopped at round one, going down to second-seeded Anikta Bhambri and Rushmi Chakravarthi of India 1-6 6-2 1-6.

After three months training in Spain, Thai No 2 Nudnida Luangnam is back in town and enters the doubles competition in the tournament. She and Taiwanese Chen Yi downed Thailand's Nicha Lertpitaksinchai and Kanyapat Narattana 6-2 2-6 6-3.

The singles actions start on Tuesday with a total of seven Thai contenders in the maindraw. Top seed Napaporn, after crashing out in leg one and two in Khon Kaen, needs a win over Indian Meghha Vakaria to regain her confidence.

Teen prodigy Noppawan, who skipped the first two series to spend time with her family in Chiang Mai, is drawn to take on Indonesian qualifier Lutfiana-Aris Budiharto. The 15-year-old is one of the potential locals to challenge for the trophy.
