PM's idea to compromise with Thaksin rejected

Constitution Drafting Committee chairman Prasong Soonsiri cried foul over a report on Tuesday that Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont ordered one of his ministers to negotiate with deposed premier Thaksin Shinawatra, in a bid to end an ongoing political conflict.

"Time for negotiation is over," Prasong said. "The scrutiny process of Thaksin's fraud cases is soon to enter the court's procedures."

If the government had this kind of attitude, the people would doubt if both sides tried to cheat the whole nation by making a compromise for their own benefits, he said.

If Thaksin wanted to negotiate with Surayud and junta chief General Sonthi Booyaratglin, however, they should listen and see what the ousted premier will say, Prasong noted.

Deputy PM Paiboon Wattanasiritham denied that he leaked the report. He doubted if the media might misunderstand about his Monday speech. He said he only talked about an attempt of both sides several months ago, which the public had already known.
