Apec forum encourages Doha Round conclusion

The agricultural and industrial groups of the AsiaPacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) forum have agreed to issue agreements to encourage the Doha Round conclusion within this year, according to directorgeneral of the Trade Negotiations Department Chutima Bunyapraphasara.

Chutima said the recentl Apec Economic Ministerial meeting, to be held in Australia, has strong agreement to support the World Trade Organisation talks conclusion by this year end. The agricultural and industrial groups will

launch its agreements by the middle of this month.

"If the Doha Round talks could not wrap up within this year, it would delay for another two years due to the change of US and the European Union politic," she

said.

So far, the Doha Round talk has been suspended for a year, due to disagreement between developed and developing nations to reduce agricultural farm subsidies and high import tariff of industrial goods.

The US has been called for decreasing its domestic subsidy to USU$12 billion a year, while the European must decrease its farm subsidy. In contrast, India and Brazil have been called to decrease its high rate of industrial products import tariff. - The Nation
