Bt7 bn investment on toxic emission control

Large-scale industrial companies are ready to invest Bt7.285 billion to overhaul equipment and machinery at their plants in the next five years, in the move to cut down air pollution, according to the Industry Ministry.

Damri Sukhothanang, deputy industry permanent secretary as chairman of the working group to publicise pollution reduction in Rayong, said in a press statement that the ministry has received cooperation from industrial plants in the province in tackling pollution problems.

Under the investment plan, they target to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) by 14,752 tonnes per annum or 30 per cent lower from current emission of 51,375 tonnes per annum. In this part, they would need to invest Bt4.176 billion.

Companies which are committed to invest in new equipment to reduce NOx are BLCP Power, Rayong power plant, Glow Energy, Rayong Olefins and PTT.

The remaining Bt3.1 billion investment is earmarked to reduce sulphur dioxide (SO2) by 20,126 tonnes per annum or 38 per cent from 56,489 tonnes. To invest in the equipment in this regard are BLCP Power, Glow Energy, Star Petroleum Refining and Rayong Refinery.

Damri said that the ministry has completed the survey on  industrial plants outside industrial estates. It has gathered toxic emission at 77 target industrial plants: 20 steel plants, 9 power plants, 4 refineries, and 44 petrochemical plants.
