No parties: Sonthi

Key figures in the Council for National Security (CNS) yesterday dismissed speculation that some junta members would form a new political party in a bid to extend their time in power.

CNS chief General Sonthi Boonyaratglin said: "I've said this many times, we have no plan to form a party."

Sonthi, however, viewed concern about the possibility of the junta wanting to form new political parties as "normal".

The CNS chief met yesterday with Defence Minister Boonrawd Somtas to discuss the political situation. He said he had assured Boonrawd the CNS was ready to control street demonstrations.

Meanwhile, General Winai Phathiyakul, the CNS secretary-general, rejected press reports he was involved in a plan to set up a Rak Chat (Patriotic) Party with politicians as groundless.

"I am worried. Some media have tried to put my name to the formation of new political parties even though it is not true," he said.
