Blast in school playground

Militants targeted a school playground yesterday in one of two blasts in the South that injured 22 people, officials said.

A bomb exploded at around 5pm at a playground of Ban Bue Su School in Yala's Bannang Sata district while a group of teens played football. The bomb, believed to have been in a motorbike parked near the playground, injured 20 people, including three seriously, Army spokesman Akra Thiproj said.

Earlier a bomb went off in Narathiwat's Sungai Padi district at around 10am, wounding two police officers of a six-man patrol. The two injured police, corporals Sawasdi Thalwan and Preechapol Suwannaphum, were on a motorbike when the bomb exploded. Immediately following the blast militants opened fire on the patrol but no one was shot in the brief gun battle that ensued, police said.
