Leaks spark warning

The Pollution Control Department yesterday warned 30 cold-storage facilities in Bangkok and its suburbs to check pipes following three leaks last week.

The department's Chemical Emergency Operation Centre director Sumetha Wichianpet said it checked cold-storage warehouses three times a year.

Many are found to have substandard pipes but owners often fail to repair them, he said.

The city has about 30 cold-storage facilities in residential communities in Yan Nawa, Klong San, Samut Prakan and Samut Sakhon.

"We need to have evacuation drills in case of ammonia leaks because the gas can kill in minutes," he said.

Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayodhin issued an urgent order for district directors to check factories for permission to store ammonia, and storage precautions.
