Change for universities

The Cabinet has approved draft legislation to transfer Maha Mongkut Buddhist University and Mahachulalongkorn Buddhist University back to the Education Ministry's care, an official said yesterday.

Amnaj Buasiri, director of the Office of National Buddhism's Department of Buddhism Education, said the Cabinet meeting on Tuesday had approved the Government Administration Regulations Act 2002 and the Ministerial Restructuring Act 2002 that transfer the two Buddhist universities from the Prime Minister's Office to the Education Ministry.

The transfer was proposed by the Office of the Public Sector Development Commission.

Thanom Butraroeng, deputy rector of Maha Mongkut Buddhist University, said the transfer would speed up the universities' operations as projects will now need approval only from the Higher Education Commission and then education minister.

He said the two Buddhist universities used to be under the Education Ministry.
