Beware of rain, flood,landslides

The weather bureau yesterday warned many areas to brace for heavy rain with the possibility of flash-floods and landslides. Coastal areas are at the greatest risk.

A low-pressure area in the Gulf of Thailand between now and Wednesday will bring heavy rain to the capital and Eastern Seabord, according to the Meteorological Department.

Meanwhile in the North, Lamphun and Mae Hong Son experienced heavy rain yesterday.

In Mae Hong Son, rains partially damaged a historic chapel at Wat Hua Wieng. The wooden, Burmese-style chapel houses a Buddha image created by Burmese craftsmen almost a hundred years ago.

Fine Arts Department Northern Region Office head Sahawat Nanna said staff were assessing the damage. They are checking on other places of interest at risk of storm damage, too.

In Wiset Chai Chan district of Angthong more than 120 homes, including a police residence, were destroyed by a storm yesterday. Trees along the Pohprayatharua-to-Suphan Buri road were brought down.

The department storm and flood warning covers Bangkok, Rayong, Chon Buri, Chanthaburi, Trat, Chumphon, Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi, Samut Sakhon, Samut Songkhram, Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung and Songkhla.
