Film-lovers to fight govt

A group of film-lovers has founded the Free Thai Cinema Movement to campaign against the Film Act BE 2473.

The group will agitate for the government to implement a new act that treats movies like other mass media.

The Free Thai Cinema Movement said it would launch a continuous campaign to have the current law annulled.

"We are all victims of an old-fashioned law," said director Apichatpong Weerasetthakul.

The group was formed by filmmakers, the Thai Film Foundation and the Thai Film Directors' Association, as well as film buffs.

Yesterday it held a meeting to discuss ideas to persuade the government to make structural changes to the censorship system which was based on the 77-year-old act.
