More kids? Just give them bigger classes

Forty-four high schools nationwide will increase the amount of Mathayom 1 students per class from 45 to 55 to support the intake from the third round of student allocations, a senior official said yesterday.

Secretary-general of the Basic Education Commission Khunying Kasama Varavarn said 36 Bangkok schools and schools in four other provinces had proposed increasing class sizes to 55.

Meanwhile, the Triam Udom Suksa Nomklao School in Samut Prakan was asked to add three more classrooms.

Kasama said the increase in class sizes should give nearly all students a place, especially in Bangkok's educational zone region 2, which had an overwhelming number of students.

She said the third round of student allocations had so far resulted in 2,600 applications and the results would be announced tomorrow.

Provincial schools requesting larger classes are Ubon Ratchathani's Benjama Maharat and Nareenukul schools, Roi Et's Suvarnaphumpittayapaisal School, Udon Thani's Udon Pittayanukul and Satrirachinuthit schools, Samut Prakan's Navamintrachinutit Suankularb Vittayalai School, Nakhon Si Thammarat's Kalayanisithammarat School and Songkhla's Mahavajiravuth School.
