Boost for exports to Iran

Exports to Iran should get a lift from Carrefour opening its first outlet there in November, the Export Promotion Department said yesterday.
"Thai exporters should take the opportunity to explore this market as Carrefour is one of the biggest retailers in the international market. The launch of Thai products in its outlet will be a great chance for Thai merchandise to reach consumers easily," said Nopadol Thongmee, commercial counsellor at the Thai Trade Centre in Tehran. Thai products will find a warm reception in the Iranian market, particularly the capital, as consumers there like oriental home decorations and food. The French firm wants to open 24 branches in Iran - starting with a hypermarket in Tehran operated by MAF Pars Hypermarket - to reach customers in the country and its neighbours, as Iran is a centre for regional trade. The Middle East is one of the new markets that the Commerce Ministry is targeting for exports as it has a large population of 250 million with high purchasing power. Exports to the Middle East are projected to rise 20 per cent to US$7.1 billion (Bt248.5 billion) this year after growing last year by 27.1 per cent to $5.9 billion. Nopadol said exporters should approach supermarkets here like Carrefour as this was the best way to reach consumers and sell value-added products. Goods with a bright future include instant and processed food, dips, beverages, leather goods and shoes, and oriental furniture and home decorations. Initially, Carrefour will import 20 to 30 tonnes of goods per month for its Tehran outlet. MAF Pars Hypermarket is seeking Thai exporters to be its suppliers.
