Kamolthip,Yupa stay on course

[BEACH VOLLEYBALL] Kamolthip Kulna and Yupa Phukrongploy sailed through to the women's final of the Samila-Sangsom Asian Beach Volleyball Championships at the Samila Beach here yesterday.

The duo trounced the Japanese pair of Yuki Yanagawa and Kazuko Sugawara 21-10 21-15 in the semi-finals

Earlier, Kamolthip and Yupa had beaten Angela Jane Crewe and Lauren Spark of Australia 21-8 21-8 in the second round and outclassed Luk Teck-hua and Beh Shun-thing of

Malaysia 21-11 21-9 in the quarter-finals.

The possibility of an all-Thai final clash faded away when their compatriots Jarunee Sannok and Usa Tenpaksee lost to Chinese Yue Yuan and Zhang Wenwen 13-21 21-19 14-16 in the semi-finals.

Jarunee and Usa had routed Filipino sisters Laborte and Carolino Michelle 21-8 21-8 in the second round to reach the quarter-finals, where they defeated Marina Storozhenko and Yelena Alenkina of Kazakhstan 21-15 21-13.

In today's final, Kamolthip and Yupa will face Yue and Zhang.

However, the Thai men failed to emulate the women and crashed out of the tournament.

Thai veteran Thaweep Thongkamnerd and rising star Sitthichai Sangkhachot went down to Indonesians Surata and Agung Santoso 18-21 21-15 10-15 in the second round.

Another Thai pair, Baworn Yangthin and Montree Cha-emnoy reached the quarter-finals with a 21-14 21-11 win over Australians Jens Michel and Damien Schumann.

However, the duo were beaten by Chinese Gao Fangtian and Han Shengwei 21-17 9-21 12-15.

Apichat Bua-luang and Sathaporn Sawangruang were the only Thais left in the event.

Apichat and Sathaporn ousted Nguyen Minh-thien and Tang Xuan-hao of Vietnam 21-15 20-22 15-6 in the second round and followed it with a win over Surata and Santoso 21-16 21-12 in the quarter-finals.

But they lost to Indonesian top seeds Andy Ardiansyah and Koko Prasetyo Darkuncoro 18-21 2 14-21 in the semi-finals.

In the men's final, Andy and Koko meet Chinese Gao and Han, who came from a set down to beat New Zealanders Lindsey and Watson 22-24 21-14 15-13 in the semi-finals.
