March vehicle sales soar 28 per cent to 56,021

A total number of 56,021 vehicles were sold last month, up 28.47 per cent from February, data compiled by Tri Petch Isuzu Sales show.
Despite the increase, first-quarter auto sales still showed an 18.67-per-cent decline from the same period last year, with sales of 138,270 units. All of the top five brands registered a year-on-year drop in sales, with Isuzu suffering the most with a 29.54-per-cent decrease.Tri Petch Isuzu did not provide details of the decline, but it is known that consumer confidence in general has been falling, due to the unclear economic and political outlook. All auto companies are bullish that the Bangkok International Motor Show, which ended on Sunday, will help drive domestic sales. The data show that Toyota remained the No-1 market player, with sales of 57,201 units in the first quarter, or 41.37 per cent of the market. Trailing behind were Isuzu with 33,494 units, or 24.22 per cent; and Honda with 15,337 units, or 11.09 per cent. Last month, 1-tonne pickups, which constituted more than half of all vehicle sales, witnessed a recovery, with sales up 30.3 per cent from February. The quarterly figures for pickup sales, however, showed a 23.04-per-cent decline, with 83,700 units sold. In this segment, Toyota once again maintained the highest market share, 36.86 per cent, or 30,852 units, compared with Isuzu's 36.72 per cent, or 30,731 units. Nissan, benefiting from the launch of its Navara model, finished in third place, with a 9.07-per-cent market share, or 7,588 units. Also in the first quarter, 37,711 passenger cars were sold, down 15.57 per cent year on year. Here, too, Toyota claimed the No-1 position, with a 49.89-per-cent market share, or 18,815 units.
