Old bones and treasure

An ancient skeleton has been found in a pot buried in a forest near a temple in Ubon Ratchathani.

The pot was found when village heads of Ban Na Nong Chuek in Khemmarat district excavated the land. The skeleton has a complete skull.

Headman Piboon Hompaka said three other clay pots were found one metre underground near the first one. The objects are being kept in a glass cabinet in Wat Phu Tam Phra Silathong.

He said villagers would take turns guarding the skeleton and the three unopened pots, which are believed to contain treasured objects, until Fine Arts Department officials arrive.

Prasart Homkaew, Khemmarat district's chief officer, said the skeleton was believed to be a woman because there were remains of female decorations.

While some parts of the skeleton had decomposed, the skull is complete with several teeth still in its mouth.

Local people are making trips to look at the skeleton but are not permitted to touch it.
